CAMMISH TO TAKE ON THE WORLD?

Former Professional Road Record Breaker and multi National Champion Ian Cammish is rumoured to be planning an attempt on the World Hour Record in early October.

Pooh-poohing the current trend to attack what he considers to be relatively weak attempts at the ‘out and out all comers’ record by the likes of Wiggins, Dowsett et al, Cammish considers the only serious record worth having is the UCI 60-65 year old age related 44.349 kms set by Robert Gilmour at Newport Velodrome in September 2015.

Wiggins and Dowsett clearly have a long way to go … upwards of 30 years or thereabouts to be precise.

Since retiring from the domestic racing scene following ‘the white van man’ incident in 2013, Cammish has kept his finger in by riding his bike regularly to and from the local tea rooms located within 20 minutes of his home in Waresley … known as the hotbed of cycling by the local carrot packers and rambling fraternity.

At a recent Scarborough Paragon Cycling Club Press Conference held between rounds of Cammish’s favourite tipple, his able assistant and advisor Ben ‘two pint’ Roberts let it slip that, subject to securing the necessary funding, Cammish will be making his return to racing on 1 October 2016 … the very day he turns 60.

“What a way to make a comeback eh?” slurred an excited Roberts.  “Not to have raced for nearly 4 years, then come back to smack the World in its face by breaking the most coveted of records would be a phenomenal achievement”.

Buoyed on by the advice given around the table by Karl Williamson and Brian Musson (both record breakers in their own right) Cammish is under no illusion as to just how hard a record it will be to beat.  “Piece of piss … it’s only a 54 minute 25 innit?”

Cammish’s long-time ‘confident’ and general all-round good egg Mick Storey seemed somewhat under-whelmed by news of the plans when approached by the journalistic masses swarming like bees around a honey-pot for more information.  “With all due respect, when he’s had a few (drinks) he does tend to talk gibberish.  Last year he announced that he’d be undertaking the Raid Pyrenean with, amongst others Eddie Adkins … and what happened with that?  I DO know there were similar murmurs this evening with Matt Purnell but as soon as he got on to the shots he was off on a different planet.”

Talks are believed to be taking place with Philosan and Saga but the team would welcome other prospective sponsors on board with open hands.  Firm backing will definitely see this attempt get off the ground … honest!

'Two pint' Roberts, Cammish and half a dozen slabs of chocolate fudge cake  seriously out to impress prospective sponsors for attack on World Hour Record.

The bike likely to be used in the attempt.

He (may) have the pedigree ... but has he still got what it takes?

Cammish's last (and successful) foray on the track was with Raleigh in the early 90s ... before there was such thing as colour photography.
