Ian Cammish: Time Trialling 'Legend' / 'icon' / 'wannabe' / 'has-been' / whatever floats your boat.
The what, why and wherefore of British Time Trialling as seen through the eyes of me … Ian Cammish, holder of over 50 National Cycling Championships and Records. Or ... the aftermath of an extended college project, “how to create a web-site” by son Jack, aged 17, Hills Road College, Cambridge. (I think winning and breaking over 50 National Championships and records were easier!).
“I could write a book” I said. But Peter Whitfield, author of Twelve Champions, The Condor Years and more, told me “there’s no money in it” so for anyone who’s interested here’s a totally free, unexpurgated insight into time trialling through the ages from yours truly … Ian Cammish aged 55 ¼.
Over the forty-plus years I've been cycling, a lot of influential people have helped me achieve what I set out to do but inevitably, over the period of time, we have all each gone our own separate ways. This is just one way of expressing my gratitude to you all. If it also brings back fond memories of yesteryear to any time trialling enthusiasts who happen to stumble on the site, then so much the better :-)
PDQ 'PB' XS full carbon time trial frame, forks, stem, seat post, headset, bars AND TRP TTV brakes. Specifically designed for Ladies and / or the shorter rider.
Things have definitely moved on since Reynolds 531 double butted tubing
ruled the roost on the British time trial circuit and it isn’t just the material
used for construction that has changed. We’ve now got teardrop shaped
carbon monocoque frames with internal cabling, integrated stems,
handlebars and braking systems. Just to throw a spanner in the works we’ve
also got a choice of bottom bracket sizes. The choice is mind boggling.
So which one would I recommend?
The big guns appear to already have it nailed as there are some VERY nice
looking Cervelos, Specialized and Vitus time trial frames out there. I also
really like the look of the Look track frames. Of course they all cost an arm
and a leg so something very similar at a fraction of the price would be good
... wouldn’t it? Well look no further.
I’ve done some research and found something that I think fits the bill. It’s
an amalgamation of all that (I think) looks good in a time trial frame. More
importantly, something VERY similar (almost the same I’d say) has already
performed at the very highest level …Ryan Mullen having already ridden his
‘version’ to a silver medal in this year’s National 10 with a time of 17- 42. So
it MUST be good mustn’t it?
This superb frame features an integrated stem and aerodynamic fork
with brakes hidden behind the fork crown and bottom bracket to reduce air
drag. It’s all been designed with aerodynamics and wind tunnel tests in mind.
It’s Di2 compatible and equipped with full internal cable routing. It’s supplied with the extremely
popular PDQ aero tt handlebars (complete with 10mm and 20mm risers) offering (almost) infinite
adjustability. The seat post is fastened with a natty little aerodynamic fastening system and the
seat tube ‘faired’ / shaped to smooth air flow around the rear wheel. The rear dropouts are horizontal
rearward-facing to allow the rear wheel to be placed as close as possible to the frame to ‘smooth the
lines’ and reduce air drag.
The overall frame has been designed to convert every single watt of your effort into speed.
Quality is of course paramount in the production of these top flight frames. All frames and forks
therefore comply with current EN14781 standards. The supplier / manufacturer has over 10 years
production technique and expertise in the carbon frame industry and adopts a strict quality control
system within its own operations where it employs only fully skilled workers.
If I was still racing (and I wasn't so tall), I’d definitely be using one of these. Why pay more for something
that CAN cost you MUCH less?
